Reduce the amount of heat you use on your hair. Hair dryers, curling irons, and flat irons can all do significant damage to your hair. Your hair and your skin aren’t that different, and a product that would damage your skin will probably also damage your hair. Use these products less often or on a lower setting when possible.

Buy the correct shampoo and conditioner. Only buy the type of shampoo and conditioner that is suitable for your hair type. This isn’t necessarily the most expensive brand! Also, don’t wash it too often or you will strip the natural oils from your hair. A good rule of thumb is every other day for oily or normal hair, and twice weekly for dry hair.

Be careful with the use of hair extensions. While hair extensions are a quick way to get longer hair, they can also cause serious damage to your natural hair and scalp. The heavy weight of the extensions can pull out natural hair, and the bonding solution can dry it out.

Whenever you color your hair, wait about 48 hours before giving it a shampoo. To keep color looking rich and bright, you need to give your hair cuticles time to properly seal after dying it. Even getting your hair wet can re-open the cuticle in those first few days. Being patient will pay dividends later.

In general, a healthy lifestyle is going to help to keep your hair healthy. Don’t smoke and keep a watch on your stress level. Also, exercise, eat well, get plenty of water and you will see the quality of your hair reflect your hard work.
